HOSPITAL SERVICES DIVISION

The Hospital Services Division has the following units under it; Teaching Hospitals, Federal Medical Centreand Specialty Hospitals. These Units are saddled with the responsibility of supervision of the various Federal Tertiary Hospitals. Recently, the Boards of Management of Federal Tertiary Health Institutions were inaugurated and are now managing the hospitals on a day-to-day basis.

NURSING DIVISION

Nursing Division is saddled with the responsibilities of overseeing nursing activities in the country with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria as its subordinate regulatory agency.

FUNCTIONS

Initiate nursing policies and participate in the planning, formulation, implementation and co-ordination of national health policies.

  1. Liaise with all state nursing departments in the implementation of planned nursing programmes.

  3. Advise the federal government through the department of hospital services.

  5. Represent the federal ministry of health in the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

  7. Represent the CNO in the board of specialist hospital.(Statutory responsibility as stated in the act.)

  9. Initiate and organize formal courses, national workshop and seminars for various categories of nurse. 
  10.  
  11. Plan, establish and maintain a system of basic, post-basic and continuing education in the areas of need.
  12.  
  13. Responsible for postings and movement of all nurses in the ministry.
  14.  
  15. Initiate and carry out surveys and research into nursing practice and education for improvement of services, and serve as national data bank for information on nursing.

  17. Assist in evaluation of all nursing training and training proposals.

  19. Liaise with the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria in all its dealings with the ministry.

  21. Participate in the appointment, placement, promotion and discipline of all cadres of nursing and midwives including creation of vacancies.

  23. Oversee the activities of Nurse Tutors Programmes under the ministry.

The Regulatory and Professional Schools Division has under its purview; Regulatory Bodies, Professional Associations and Professional Schools who train senior, medium and junior level cadres in the Health Sector.

DENTISTRY DIVISION

Dentistry Division is saddled with the responsibility of advising the Federal Government through the Ministry on all Oral Health matters, policy formulation, resource mobilisation, monitoring and evaluation of such policies, supervision of Oral Health in schools as well as Research Institutions and delivery of affordable, effective and qualitative Oral Health Care Services to Nigerians.

NATIONAL BLOOD TRANSFUSION SERVICES DIVISION

The Core Mandate of the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) is to provide a centrally coordinated blood transfusion service on a country-wide basis within the National Health Plan; provision of safe, quality and adequate blood in an equitable and accessible manner.

TRAUMA/MEDICAL EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT DIVISION

This Division is saddled with the responsibility of advising the Federal Government through the Ministry on Health Emergencies and Disaster Management; formulates policies on same, monitors and evaluates the implementation of health emergencies and disasters.

e-HEALTH/TELEMEDICINE PROGRAMME

The e-Health/Telemedicine Programme encompasses services such as health related internet information sites, automated online therapy, online consultations (real time), online pharmacies, tele-health, home monitoring systems and virtual clinics. This programme is still at its nascent stage and is to come up with national e-Health Policy as well as development of National Regulatory Framework with guidelines to standardise e-Health Care Delivery.

NATIONAL CANCER CONTROL PROGRAMME AND NUCLEAR MEDICINE

The National Cancer Control Programme and Nuclear Medicine advises the Federal Government through the Ministry on Cancer Diseases. It also has the role of maintaining a Cancer Register in the country, development of cancer policies with necessary monitoring and evaluation functions.
